What is a BCI Battery Group Size?

BCI Battery Group Size Chart

A BCI battery group size is a type of designation system universal in nature, used throughout the industry for categorizing lead-acid batteries based on physical dimensions, terminal configurations, and other design characteristics. Since this forms an industry-wide sizing system, compatibility between batteries and the appropriate equipment or vehicles being powered is thus ensured.

The BCI group size functions like a universal language that assists in identifying and selecting the proper battery for a particular application. It allows manufacturers, retailers, and consumers to easily match batteries with the correct size and specifications required by different devices, vehicles, or machinery.

Having a common sizing system means most batteries are unique in shape, size, and terminal arrangement. Without a common method of labeling, it would be really difficult to ensure that the right battery fits a particular application. In essence, the BCI group size makes selection easier by granting the right battery to be chosen for optimal performance, safety, and compatibility.

What Makes a BCI Group Size?

  • Battery Size: Ensure proper installation.
  • Battery Performance: Check ampere hours.
  • Terminal Location: Confirm the vehicle is properly connected to the battery.
  • Battery Type: Identify the chemistry.

Common BCI Battery Group Size Categories

BCI battery group sizes are primarily categorized into three major segments: Automotive, Commercial, and Deep-cycle. Each category serves specific applications and has distinct characteristics in terms of design, performance, and sizing.

Deep-Cycle BCI Battery Group Sizes:

Deep-cycle batteries are optimized for applications that require sustained energy delivery over an extended period, such as marine, recreational vehicles (RVs), golf carts, and renewable energy systems. These batteries are designed to withstand repeated deep discharge and recharge cycles. Common deep-cycle BCI group sizes include 24, 27, 31, and 8D.

Automotive BCI Battery Group Sizes:

These batteries are designed for starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) applications in passenger vehicles, light trucks, and other automotive uses. Automotive batteries prioritize high cranking power for reliable engine starts and are sized accordingly. Common automotive BCI group sizes include 24, 25, 34, 35, 51R, and 65.

Commercial BCI Battery Group Sizes:

Commercial batteries cater to the needs of heavy-duty vehicles, machinery, and equipment used in industries such as construction, mining, and transportation. These batteries are engineered for deep cycling and high reserve capacity to power auxiliary equipment and accessories. Popular commercial BCI group sizes include 4D, 8D, and 31.

It’s important to note that while these categories provide a general guideline, some battery group sizes may overlap or be used in multiple applications, depending on specific requirements and manufacturer recommendations.

This cross-reference chart lists only the battery dimensions, omitting important details like terminal orientation, terminal type, base clamping type, lifting edge, and other small but significant factors.

Most battery packs in the list have very similar dimensions, except for BCI Group 48 and BCI Group 49. For instance, a BCI Group 48 battery measures 278 x 175 x 192 mm, with the positive terminal on the right. It is equivalent to DIN/EN battery packs labeled H6, L3, and 66L3, which measure 278 x 175 x 190 mm, also with the positive terminal on the right.

In contrast, the BCI Group 98R battery pack has dimensions of 283 x 175 x 190 mm, with the positive terminal on the right. It closely matches the H6, L3, and 66L3 packs, being only about 5 mm longer, allowing for a generally compatible fit in the H6 battery compartment.

When replacing a battery, always check the actual dimensions and measure the battery compartment. Be sure to verify battery orientation, terminal type, fixing system, and other details.

12V Deep Cycle Lithium Batteries

Small 12V deep cycle and general-purpose batteries have SLA and LiFePO4 types. Common applications of these batteries are UPS devices, alarms, toys, wheelchairs, and so on.

The popular models commonly come in the form of smaller capacities, usually up to 30-35Ah, and normally come with a standard Group U1 and U1R batteries as the most common choices.

For applications requiring larger deep cycle or general-purpose batteries, refer to larger groups, including 24, 27 or 31.

The following chart is representative of many of the most popular small 12V general-purpose batteries, their dimensions and terminal configuration.

These sizes apply to a wide range of vehicles, so it’s best to consult your vehicle owner’s manual or a professional to determine the appropriate battery pack size.

How to Care for Your Car Battery

Proper care of your car battery can extend its lifespan and ensure reliable performance. Here are some essential tips:

  1. Regular Inspections: Frequently check for corrosion, loose connections, and leaks. Cleaning the terminals helps maintain a secure connection.

  2. Keep It Clean: Use a mixture of baking soda and water to gently clean the battery terminals, removing any buildup for optimal performance.

  3. Limit Electrical Use: Minimize the use of electrical accessories when the engine is off to avoid draining the battery.

  4. Drive Regularly: Make sure to drive your car at least once a week for a reasonable distance to keep the battery charged and prevent deterioration.

  5. Temperature Protection: Extreme temperatures can negatively impact battery performance. Park in the shade during hot weather, and consider using a thermal blanket in the winter.

  6. Charging System Inspections: Regularly test your car’s charging system to identify potential issues early and prevent battery-related problems.

  7. Learn to Jump-Start: Knowing how to safely jump-start a dead battery is a valuable skill to have in emergencies.

By following these tips and maintaining other components, such as belts, you can help ensure the overall health of your vehicle and prolong its lifespan.

FAQs

What sizes do batteries come in?

Purchase a compatible battery for your golf cart and save yourself from really costly mistakes.purchasing locally:purchase for your needs.Batteries are available in different sizes for various applications. The common ones include AAA, AA, C, D, and 9-volt; the smallest in size and the lowest capacity is the AAA, while the D-type batteries are of a bigger size for higher energy storage. The requirements of the device determine which one has to be used in order to obtain the best performance from it. Other less common sizes include A, B, N, and CR123A. It is always better to check the size from the device’s specification or from the manufacturer.

Which is bigger: C or D battery?

C and D batteries are cylindrical dry cells. They differ in their size and capacity. A C battery has about 50 mm in length and about 26.2 mm in diameter. This makes it larger than the triple A and double A batteries but smaller than a D battery. The D batteries are larger in size, about 61.5 mm by 33 mm, with higher energy capacity and hence useful at higher power applications. Both provide a nominal voltage of 1.5 volts and come in alkaline, lithium, and rechargeable options.

What battery size is larger than AA?

While the size of AAA batteries is smaller compared to AA, there is another size called A, which is a bit bigger compared to the batteries of type AA. The batteries of type A have a diameter of approximately 17 mm and a length of approximately 50 mm, similar to AA but with higher charge capacity up to 4500mAh. They find applications in power tools, older laptop batteries, and devices needing sustained power and high current output, hence finding wide versatility for various applications.

What are the sizes and types of car batteries?

Car batteries come in a variety of sizes, standardized by BCI, which assigns each battery a group number that includes dimensional inches and millimeters. One of the most common batteries is a 24F that fits most models of Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Acura. Items to remember when buying a car battery are terminal type, configuration, mounting system, polarity, cranking amps, and cold cranking amps, which are necessary to start a car in cold conditions. All of these specifications are important for understanding compatibility and performance for your vehicle.
