1,151 Published by BSLBATT Aug 03,2024

In the world of fishing and marine adventures, efficiency and reliability are the backbone of marine operations. Marine batteries play an important role in providing energy for a variety of applications including starting the engine and powering the onboard electronics. Choosing the right marine battery is crucial, whether for large ships or small boats.Read this blog post as we explore the basics of marine batteries and how to choose the best battery for your needs.

Marine Batteries: Deep Cycle Batteries, Starting Batteries, Dual Purpose Batteries

Marine Batteries types

Marine batteries can be classified as deep cycle, starting, or dual-purpose batteries. If you are a new fisherman, a boat owner, or want to upgrade your boat to lithium batteries, then you may be wondering what the differences between lithium batteries and conventional batteries are. Aside from that, you might also wonder why lithium batteries are superior to lead-acid batteries for boats. It is known that lithium batteries have a long shelf life, constant power, high temperature resistance, faster charging, no maintenance, and are light in weight. Each marine battery type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

• Starting batteries ensure smooth engine ignition,
• Deep cycle batteries Maintain a constant power supply to extend the time of your boat’s electrical systems and appliances.
• Dual purpose batteries can be used for both starting and deep cycle to provide power.

Starting batteries

Marine starting batteries, also known as boat starter batteries and marine engine starting batteries, are batteries specifically designed to start marine engines. Engines are accelerated to start quickly with high cranking currents (CA) and cold cranking currents (CCA).

Battery cranking current measures the amount of power a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 32F (0″C) while maintaining a minimum voltage. Batteries can be rated for starting power based on CA in relatively mild or moderate climates (where temperatures are not extremely low).

Battery starting power is measured by cold cranking current, which is a more stringent measurement. Basically, CCA is the maximum current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds, while maintaining a minimum voltage. Cold weather makes it harder to crank an engine, due to the viscous nature of engine oil.

BSLBATT offers the B-LFP12-100 (Group 31) and the B-LFP24-100/B-LFP24-200 (Group 8D). You can use our high-performance lithium-ion batteries to power your onboard electronics. The B-LFP12-100 has a higher peak current than its competitors. This increase in peak current allows the most demanding outboard motors to be started. For starting outboard engines, the B-LFP12-100 provides a lot of power in a short period of time.

Deep cycle batteries

Deep cycle marine batteries are specially designed to provide stable energy for your trolling motor and are the best choice for applications that require continuous power. Unlike short-term high-current starting batteries, deep cycle marine batteries tend to use more reliable materials and can withstand multiple charge and discharge without damage.
Usually power various equipment on the boat, such as lights, fish finders, trolling motors, refrigerators, radios, mobile phones, navigation aids, etc.

All BSLBATT products are made of the most advanced LiFePO4 chemical composition.

• IP65 waterproof.

• More than 6000 deep cycle life.

• 12-year design life, 5-year warranty.

• 0 maintenance, 0 pollution.

• Intelligent BMS battery management system 6-level security protection.

• Support Bluetooth IOS and Android to check battery status at any time.

Marine Batteries types-Dual purpose batteries

Dual-purpose batteries offer the characteristics of both a starting battery and a deep-cycle battery, providing a high burst of power to start the engine, as well as enough energy to keep the trolling motor running.
If you have a large boat or if you have a lot of electronics on board, it is often recommended to use two different batteries to provide targeted energy.

The B-LFP300 from BSLBATT is a dual-purpose model that can provide up to 600 amps for two seconds to start your boat motor.

Marine batteries come in different BCI sizes. The most common marine battery sizes include 24, 27, 31, and 8D batteries. The B-LFP12-100 is a 31 marine battery, and the B-LFP12-300 battery is an 8D battery size. Common applications for the 12-100 include small boats such as fishing boats and bass boats, and common applications for the 12-300 include catamarans and large sailboats.

Marine Batteries types-Trolling Motor Battery

Trolling motor batteries are batteries designed for boat trolling motors. They are designed to provide longer power when trolling at slow speeds in fishing areas. The number of lithium batteries required depends on the voltage of the trolling motor.

BSLBATT offers deep cycle LiFePO4 batteries in 12V, 24V, 36V, 48V. If you have a 12V trolling motor, you can choose from a variety of 12V lithium battery options. If you have a 24V trolling motor, you can use 2 12V batteries in series or a single 24V lithium battery. If you have a 36V trolling motor, you can use 3 12V batteries in series or a single 36V battery.

BSLBATT offers a variety of 12V lithium battery specifications to choose from. The amp-hours will determine the life of the battery. The amp-hours measure the amount of power within the trolling motor battery.
The most common trolling motor lithium-ion batteries are lightweight and provide enough amp-hours to extend your fishing time. Includes 12V and 24V battery options in 50Ah, 72Ah, 100Ah, 200Ah and 300Ah deep cycle batteries. If you want to stay on the water longer, just increase the amp hours.

What are the characteristics of marine batteries?

Marine batteries face unique challenges, such as constant movement, vibration, and moisture exposure. Because of this, they are designed to withstand shocks and vibrations on board, especially when sailing in rough waters at high speeds.

In addition to improving internal components and structure, the battery plates are secured to prevent vibration damage. The marine environment poses additional safety risks, which is why marine batteries have additional safety features. A spark arrestor is fitted to some marine batteries to prevent explosions during charging.

Furthermore, marine batteries are designed to resist corrosion caused by contact with seawater. Materials such as lead alloys are often used because they are corrosion-resistant. Lastly, marine batteries are available in a variety of sizes and terminal types to suit a variety of vessel settings and electrical systems. To prevent accidental short circuits or facilitate quick connections, some marine batteries have specialized terminal designs.

How long can a marine battery last?

Starter batteries can last 3 to 5 years.
Deep cycle batteries  can last 2 to 4 years.
Lithium marine batteries can last 5 to 10 years!

Frequent use and deep discharges of lead-acid marine batteries can cause them to wear out faster and shorten their lifespan. Managing discharge levels and avoiding over-discharge can significantly extend battery life. To extend battery life, it is also important to charge the battery correctly. Overcharging or undercharging can damage and shorten the lifespan of marine batteries. Additionally, regular maintenance, including cleaning the terminals and protecting the battery from extreme conditions, is essential to extend battery life.

BSLBATT lithium-ion batteries have more than 6,000 deep cycles, built-in BMS battery management system, and six-level safety protection. They can be used for 10-15 years and no longer require maintenance, providing convenience for sailing.

How to store marine batteries?

Store the items in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Batteries should not be exposed to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, which can accelerate their degradation. Maintaining the battery’s performance and preventing unnecessary wear is made easier by storing it in a stable environment. Make sure your marine battery is charged according to the manufacturer’s instructions before storing it.
