1,405 Published by BSLBATT Apr 18,2022

Are you considering installing lithium batteries in your marine, but have a lot of unanswered questions? In our guide, we want to explain the pros and cons of marine lithium batteries and who they are best suited for. You will also learn about the uses of BMS and we will answer the most common questions related to the use of LiFePO4 batteries in marine. At the end of the article, even as a beginner, you should have all the information you need to buy the right lithium battery for your needs.

Upgrading your marine to lithium batteries has always been a frequent question asked by customers. In essence, it is always about interaction with existing technology and possible reservations. In order to be able to present first-hand answers, we have been in practice for quite some time dealing with lithium battery-based power supply issues. bslbatt After a long time as an integrator solving marine lithium batteries for our customers, we have gained a lot of experience in marine lithium battery convenience.

The safety of marine lithium batteries is an important aspect. It is not because the battery itself is dangerous. We have chosen an intrinsically safe technology that has nothing to do with the problems of cell phones and laptops. The sticking point is the existing onboard electronics. Lithium batteries can deliver much higher currents than lead batteries. Cable cross-sections and electrical protection must be designed for this, or there is a risk of cable fire in the event of a failure.

The question of which lithium technology to use in a ship’s electrical system is almost self-explanatory.

Batteries with lead-acid technology have been on the market for more than 150 years. in 1854, Wilhelm Sinsteden was first able to generate electricity from lead and sulfuric acid. Later, his battery was further developed by the Frenchman Gaston Pant. But it was not until 27 years later that Henri Tudor succeeded in creating a battery that could be produced on a large scale.

Since then – purely in principle – nothing much has changed. With the introduction of gel-bonded acids, batteries became leak-proof and eventually, the Gates Rubber Company developed an acid-impregnated glass mat in 1972 – the “Absorbent Glass Mat” (AGM) battery was born. It can discharge deeper, can deliver high currents, is not prone to sulfation, does not emit oxy-hydrogen gas, and is not leak-proof. Until recently, this AGM accumulator was considered the ultimate in electricity storage – until lithium batteries appeared on the market.

For lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo, or LFP), the cell voltage is 3.2 volts, so four cells make up a nominal 12.8 Volt battery. This is perfect for operating a traditional 12-volt onboard power supply, and all consumers can continue to use it without any changes – a huge advantage for small to medium-sized yachts.

High capacity, fast charging, lightweight and at least three times as many recharges as a quality lead-acid battery – lithium iron phosphate is the ideal marine battery. Lead-acid batteries are rapidly becoming redundant. More and more customers are turning to lithium batteries due to better performance and faster recharging. While the higher initial cost may give pause to customers who don’t plan to use their boats very often, lithium batteries offer longer life, reliable power and better warranties in the long run. BSLBATT can provide customized solutions for different batteries and sizes.

Converting lead-acid batteries to lithium batteries makes technical and economic sense.

The brain of the Marine lithium battery – BMS

Unlike lead-acid batteries, Li-ion batteries are equipped with an intelligent management system – BMS board. As the information management center of Li-ion batteries, the BMS plays very many roles, such as charger control, battery temperature control and passive balancing, charge and discharge information collection of individual cells, etc. But these functions always serve three goals, the first is to protect the battery and its cells from damage; the second is to extend Marine lithium battery life; the third is to maintain the battery condition so that it can continue to operate properly.
